DIY Wedding Pinwheels

DIY Wedding Pinwheels thumbnail
Personalize a pinwheel to reflect your wedding color palette.

A pinwheel, typically a childhood toy, can also translate into a whimsical and fun portion of a wedding's decor. The pinwheel can be placed on the ceremony chairs of the wedding guests as a ceremony favor or aspect of the ceremony decor. The pinwheels, when customized to suit your wedding day, can make for memorable wedding photos. The pinwheels can be bunched together as centerpieces for a wedding, especially for an outdoor wedding. They can also be given to children attending the wedding as favors.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose two different stationery designs for the pinwheel project. The two designs should be noticeably different but still complement each other. Utilize colors and themes from the wedding decor for inspiration. Use an 8 1/2-by-11 inch sheet of paper for each.

    • 2

Lay one paper over the other so both pages are lying design side up, according to EnchantedLearning.com. Fold the bottom right corners of both pages until the bottom edges of the papers line up evenly with the left edges, forming a perfect square. Trim away the excess strip of paper at the top leaving only the perfect square.

    • 3

Fold the bottom right corners of both papers (the two should still be lying on top of each other) up to meet the top left corners, forming a triangle. Fold the triangle in half again, bringing the right point to meet the left, forming a small triangle. Unfold the pages to reveal the creases.

    • 4

Add any additional decorations to the decorative sides of both pages of the stationery, such as writing the couple's initials all over the pages, drawing in hearts or writing their wedding date.

    • 5

Lay the pages, decorative side up, on top of each other again. Cut a slit on each crease, approximately halfway to the center of the page, cutting through both sheets of paper.

    • 6

Punch a hole in each right-hand corner of each triangle panel the creases create.

    • 7

Pull the edges with the holes to the center of the pinwheel, refraining from folding the corners down flat, to reveal a portion of the decorative stationery below the one lying on top. Insert a tack through all of the four holes and through the center of both sheets of stationery.

    • 8

Place a colorful straw behind the pinwheel and insert the back of the pin poking out from the back of the panel through it. The pin should only protrude through one side of the straw, with the point of the pin located inside the straw. Insert a piece of clay into the straw to cover the point and seal the pinwheel to the straw holder. Choose a straw that reflects or complements the wedding color palette.
