How to Sew a Tulle Slip

How to Sew a Tulle Slip thumbnail
Tulle fabric is used for tutus, as well as slips.

Tulle slips make sheer fabrics less transparent, adding an extra layer of protection and modesty underneath a skirt. Layered tulle slips also add dimension and puff, causing your skirt to flare. Make your own tulle slip with tulle fabric and elastic. Hand sewn tulle skirts involve easy stitch work, making this project very beginner-friendly.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your waist with a measuring tape. Measure your length from the waist to the above the knee, depending on where the hem of the skirt is located. Record these measurements.

    • 2

Cut a piece of 1-inch wide elastic band that is about a half-inch longer than your waist measurement.

    • 3

Cut tulle fabric. Cut the fabric twice as long as the desired length of the slip and 8 inches wider than your waist measurement -- the added fabric will accommodate the hips. For instance, if you want the slip to be 18 inches long and your waist measurement is 30 inches, cut the fabric to 36-by-38 inches.

    • 4

Cut additional pieces of tulle fabric for a fuller slip. Cut each layer slightly shorter in length to create a tiered slip. For instance, cut the second piece 4 inches shorter than the first and the third piece 4 inches shorter than the second.

    • 5

Lay the tulle on a table or flat surface. Horizontally place the elastic band in the middle of the tulle fabric. Fold the tulle over the band. Pin the tulle to the band at the fold to keep in place.

    • 6

Stitch the tulle to the elastic band, removing pins as you sew. Whip stitch, wrapping the thread around the top edge of the elastic band between stitches.

    • 7

Meet the two ends of the elastic band. Slightly overlap the ends and stitch together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use white tulle to wear underneath a white or lightly-colored skirt. Use black tulle to wear underneath a darker skirt.
