How to Make a Paper Box Glide

Fold a match box or create a larger paper box to use for gifts.

Origami paper boxes offer a way to create handmade boxes to store jewelry, trinkets and even matches. Paper box glides, or slides as they are sometimes called, are similar to match boxes and can be as decorative as you want -- you can choose colored paper or stamp the box with designs. Fold the box to present it as a gift, or place it on your desk to hold trinkets. Make the box as large or small as you want by adjusting the size of the paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold one piece of square paper in half, then in half lengthwise two more times. This creates a long, narrow strip of paper. Open it up to find seven creases.

    • 2

Turn the paper so the creases run straight up and down, then fold the square in half to create a crease that runs through the middle of the existing creases. Fold the paper in half lengthwise two more times. This creates a long, narrow strip of paper. Open it to find a grid system created by the creases.

    • 3

Fold the top of the paper along the second crease line so two rows of grid squares are showing. Fold the bottom and two sides of the paper along the first crease lines so only one line of grid squares is showing. This creates a smaller rectangular-shaped paper.

    • 4

Pull and pinch each corner of the rectangle in to create a small triangle shape that points toward the center of the rectangle, and causes the paper to become a three-dimensional box bottom.

    • 5

Measure the length of the box. Center this measurement along one side of the other piece of square paper, and fold the excess horizontally along the top and bottom. For example, if the box is 4 inches long and the paper is 8 inches long, fold it 2 inches from the top and 2 inches from the bottom to create a rectangle that measures 4 inches by 8 inches.

    • 6

Measure the width of the box. Center this measurement along the longest side of the rectangular-shaped paper you just folded, and fold the excess along the top and bottom. For example, if the box is 2 inches wide and your paper is 8 inches long, fold the rectangle 3 inches from the top and 3 inches from the bottom. The paper now measures 2 inches by 4 inches.

    • 7

Unfold the second piece of paper into the shape of the rectangle created in Step 5 to see the two creases created in Step 6. Line the box up inside these creases, and wrap the rectangle around the box, creating creases aligned with the edges of the box as you wrap. This creates the wrapper that the box slides into.

    • 8

Glue the wrapper where the two ends meet, and allow it to dry and slide the box into the wrapper.
