How to Make a Dump Truck Craft
Big machines and construction equipment hold a larger-than-life fascination for many young children. Making a dump truck craft can bring the giant trucks down to a size that allows children to act out their fantasies of operating the over-sized machinery. Using recycled materials puts the project in the reach of most families as it uses only common household items that would otherwise be trash.

1
Wash and dry a half-gallon paper milk carton. Glue or tape the spout closed and set the carton so the spout runs horizontally.
-
2
Measure two inches from the flat edge at the base of the spout and cut straight across the top on the horizontal, running the same direction as the spout ridge and straight down both sides about halfway. Cut straight back and across the bottom of the carton to separate the piece from the rest of the box. This will be the truck bed.

3
Hot glue chopsticks or wooden skewers to the front and back on the underside to serve as axles. Alternately, poke the axles through the lower edge of the truck body on both sides for wheels that actually rotate. Hot glue plastic or metal jar or bottle lids to the ends of the axles for wheels.
-
4
Slide the truck bed piece into the open space at the back of the truck. Insert a brad through both layers in the lower rear corner at both sides for a flexible pivot that allows the bed to raise and lower.
-
5
Paint the truck as desired with tempera paints.
