How to Crochet a Brooch

How to Crochet a Brooch thumbnail
A crocheted brooch can be as decorative as one made from gemstones.

Crochet a brooch for yourself or make several to give as holiday gifts. It should take no more than an hour to create one. Change the colors to match your wardrobe. Experiment with different yarns and decorative threads to make silky, feathery or metallic flowers. A crocheted brooch can be used to hold a shawl in place or to perk up an otherwise boring blazer or sweater. They are inexpensive to make and are an interesting project for scouts, 4H groups and church groups.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach green yarn to the crochet hook with a slipknot. Make four chain stitches. In the second chain stitch from the hook, make two double crochet stitches. Make a half double crochet stitch in the next chain stitch, and make three single crochet stitches in the last chain.

    • 2

Work back across the chain on the opposite side of the stitches you just made. Make a half double crochet stitch in the next chain stitch. Make two double crochet stitches in the next chain stitch. Join to the beginning stitch with a slipstitch. Fasten off. You created a leaf.

    • 3

Attach the white yarn to the crochet hook with a slipknot. Make two chain stitches. Make six double crochet stitches in the chain stitch farthest from the hook. Mark the beginning of this round with a contrasting colored piece of yarn or row marker. Make two double crochet stitches in each of the previous stitches. Move the marker to the beginning of this round.

    • 4

Make two half triple crochets in the next stitch, beginning round 3. Make two half triple crochet stitches and a slipstitch in the next stitch. One petal is created. Continue making two half triple crochet stitches and one slipstitch in each of the previous double crochets until you have made six petals. Fasten off yarn.

    • 5

Attach the pink yarn to the crochet hook with a slipknot. Make two chain stitches. Make six double crochet stitches in the farthest chain stitch from the hook. Use a row marker to keep track of the rows.

    • 6

Make two half triple crochet stitches and one slipstitch in each of the previous six stitches. You will have a smaller flower with petals.

    • 7

Weave in all loose ends with a large-eye needle. Attach the leaf to the pin base by stitching through the leaf and the holes in the pin. If the pin has no holes use glue to secure it.

    • 8

Thread the large-eye needle with pink yarn. Place the small flower into the larger flower and secure with a French knot. Secure the flower to the leaf by stitching the flower to the pin base.
