How to Make a Superhero Costume Out of Thermal Underwear

Thermal underwear comes in plenty of superhero-friendly colors.

Superheroes wear costumes that cover their bodies from head to toe, as a protective mechanism. Whether you want to create a superhero costume for Halloween or for play around the house, consider using thermal underwear as the body suit of the costume. Thermal underwear will cover the arms, legs and torso, as well as keep the wearer warm. Once you have the body suit you can add accessories, based on the type of superhero you are creating, and come up with a color scheme.

• Fabric glue
• Gloves
• Bed sheet
• Boots or sneakers
• Scarf
• Patches
• Sewing machine

Instructions

1. Draw a superhero initial onto a sheet of craft felt. This could be, for example, an "S" for Superman; or it could be the initial of the person wearing the costume. Make a block letter so that the letter is thick and wide. Cut the felt letter out with scissors. Glue the felt letter onto the chest of the thermal underwear with fabric glue. The color of the felt letter should contrast with the color of the thermal underwear to stand out.

2. Cut off the fingertips from a pair of gloves. Wear the gloves on the hands to achieve a bad-boy or bad-girl superhero look.

3. Tie a small bed sheet around the neck of the superhero to make the superhero's cape. Any type of fabric will work for a cape, so if you do not have a small enough bed sheet, consider using a towel or a king-size pillowcase.

4. Put on boots or sneakers over the thermal underwear. Superheroes need to be able to run fast and chase their enemies, so any type of boot or sneaker will work for a superhero costume, from cowboy boots to galoshes to tennis shoes.

5. Cut out two eye holes in a long scarf. Wrap the scarf around the superhero's head, positioning the holes over the eyes. This becomes the superhero mask, which is an important accessory for disguising the mysterious superhero.

6. Sew patches onto the thermal underwear, if the superhero has a particular theme that warrants patches. For instance, an Irish-themed superhero might have clover patches sewn onto the thermal underwear. Or, for a superhero whose mode of transportation is a motorcycle, biking patches can be sewn on. Alternatively, use hot glue to attach your patches.
