Choose your tools. The type of yarn you use will determine the size of the crochet hook you need. For typical blanket-weight yarn, use a U.S. size J or 6 mm crochet hook. The size of the knitting needle will determine the size of the open lacy area in the pattern. The larger the loop wanted, the larger the needle you should select. A 25 mm needle will give you an opening of nearly 1 inch in diameter, depending on your stitch tension.

Select your yarn. For a small baby blanket, 28-by-39 inches, you will need about 750 yards.

3
Check your gauge. With a U.S. size J hook, using medium-weight yarn, you should have a gauge of 18 single crochets for four inches and 18 rows for five inches. Make a practice swatch before beginning the project.

4
Chain 125 stitches. You can make the blanket wider or narrower, but use a multiple of five chain stitches.
-
5
Bring stitches onto the knitting needle by inserting the crochet hook into each chain and yarn over onto the knitting needle.
-
6
Insert hook into the first five stitches as one and pull yarn through. Single crochet five times into the set of five loops, sliding the loop off the knitting needle. Insert hook into next five loops and single crochet five times. Continue until you have all the stitches off the knitting needle. This comprises row 2 of the pattern.

7
Pull the last loop onto the needle. Pull a loop through each single crochet from the previous row and place onto knitting needle. You should now have 125 loops on the needle again. This comprises row 3 of the pattern.
-
8
Repeat rows 2 and 3 of the pattern until your blanket is the desired length. Single crochet along the top and bottom edges to reinforce the blanket.
