How to Make a Viking Shield Out of Paper

How to Make a Viking Shield Out of Paper thumbnail
Real viking shields were often 3 feet wide.

Defend against foes by making a viking shield out of paper. Real viking shields were large, wooden and circular. They were held with an iron grip on the inside center of the shield. On the exterior, a domed iron boss protected the hand. Recreate the viking shield by cutting it out of stiff paper, such as card stock or poster. Measure and use the length of your arm to construct a proper shield for you.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a large circle, approximately 2 feet wide, on the heavyweight paper with a pencil and cut it out with the scissors. Gluing several sheets of thin paper is another way to construct heavyweight paper.

    • 2

Trace a small plastic container in the center of your viking shield. Use a deli or yogurt container. Draw a smaller circle, roughly 1-inch smaller, inside the first circle to create a lip for the container. Cut around the second circle.

    • 3

Push the plastic container through the hole on the opposite side to form the "boss" of the shield. Cut out a 2-by-6-inch piece of heavyweight paper for the grip. Glue it across on the inside of the plastic container to form the grip.

    • 4

Glue three layers of newspaper over the exterior of the shield to strengthen it. Allow it to dry completely.

    • 5

Decorate the exterior of the shield with paints using paintbrushes. Let it dry completely before using.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use real viking shields as references to decorate your craft.

  • Form a cardboard or paper helmet to accompany your shield.

  • The paper viking shield does not protect against real swords.
