How to Make the Triangles for 3-D Swans
Japanese origami is not the only type of paper folding technique. A type of modular paper folding technique is called Golden Venture Folding or Chinese paper folding, in which paper is folded into a triangular unit. For a three-dimensional swan, approximately 400 to 450 of these triangles are needed. Make these triangle units by starting with a square piece of paper.

1
Cut the square piece of paper into four equal sized strips. To form four equal strips fold the paper in half, then fold in half again in the same direction. Cut out each of these sections with scissors.
-
2
Fold one of the strips in half lengthwise. Then open it up again. Fold the bottom left side up to the center crease. Fold the bottom right side up the center crease.
-
-
3
Turn the folding over to the other side. Bring the top left corner to the middle line. Bring the top right corner to the center line to create a triangle on top.
-
4
Fold the top triangle down to meet the bottom triangle. The folded paper looks like a triangle now. Fold the right side to the left side. This last direction is critical to the correct formation of the triangles. If formed correctly, the triangle has two pockets on the right side.

Repeat Steps 1 to 4 to create more triangles.

Tips & Warnings
Work on the triangles over a period of time, rather than finishing all of them at one sitting.
Ask a group of friends to help you construct all the triangles needed for the 3-D swan.
A sharp knife can be used to cut the paper quickly rather than scissors.
