How to Make a Glazed Scrabble Tile Pendant

Find Scrabble games with missing tiles at yard sales and thrift stores.

If you discover that your Scrabble game is missing a letter or two, you don't have to think that the fun is over. Instead of creating words, use the leftover tiles to create jewelry. The small size and smooth surface of Scrabble tiles lend themselves to a new life as pendants. Use a small square of wrapping paper from a special gift, a remnant of wallpaper left over from a renovation or a bit of scrapbook paper to complete this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a square of paper slightly larger than the Scrabble tile, or about 18 x 20 mm, with a paper trimmer or scissors. You may want to cut several squares with the pattern of the paper aligned in different directions in order to see which you like best.

    • 2

Brush a thin coat of PVA glue over the back of the paper with the paintbrush.

    • 3

Position the paper onto the blank side of the Scrabble tile. Smooth it gently with your fingers to remove any air bubbles. Set it aside to let the glue dry thoroughly.

    • 4

Place the tile on the cutting mat with the paper side down. With the craft knife, trim away any excess paper from around the edges of the tile.

    • 5

Apply a thin layer of PVA over the top of the paper. Let it dry.

    • 6

Cover the top of the tile with diamond glaze. Squeeze a small amount into the center of the tile. With the point of a toothpick or the end of a wooden craft stick, gently spread the diamond glaze out to the edges of the tile. Add a few drops at a time if you need more. The diamond glaze will have a cloudy appearance. This is normal and it will dry clear and shiny. If desired, add rhinestones or other embellishments to the wet diamond glaze. Allow the tile to dry for at least 12 hours.

    • 7

Sand the edges of the tile lightly with fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe off the dust with a soft cloth.

    • 8

Attach a bail to the back of the tile with a few drops of Diamond Glaze or E6000 glue. After the glue is completely dry, string the pendant on a chain, cord or ribbon.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a photocopy of a favorite photo instead of decorative paper.

  • Drill a tiny hole and add a jump ring instead of a bail.

  • Use E6000 to glue a large bead to the top edge of the tile instead of a bail.

  • Instead of covering the tile with paper, use the glaze directly over the letter for a whimsical pendant. Make several to spell a name or word and hang on a single chain or bracelet.

  • The higher the humidity in your area, the longer it will take the Diamond Glaze to dry.

  • Gluing the paper to the litter-side of the Scrabble tile may result in the grooves of the letter showing through the paper.

  • When applying diamond glaze and E6000, work in a well-ventilated area.

  • Do not touch the Diamond Glaze until it is completely dry or else it will smudge or leave fingerprints.
