Teach your child how to crochet with a basic chain stitch.

Crocheting, like other forms of needlework, requires basic stitches to create large pieces such as scarves, blankets and decorative items. The most basic stitch of all is the chain stitch. With a crochet hook and some yarn, you can teach a child how to do the basic chain stitch.

Instructions

    • 1

Give the child his own crochet hook and yarn, so he can follow your lead as you demonstrate each step. Give the child a large crochet hook, which is easier for small hands to hold. Show him how to wrap the yarn into a ball to deter tangles.

    • 2

Show the child how to do a slip knot with the yarn. Have him watch as you wrap the end of the string once around two of your fingers. The end of the yarn should be hanging over your palm, under the loop of string around your fingers. The rest of the string will be entirely behind your hand. Have him start his own slip knot.

    • 3

Have the child open up his fingers slightly so there is an opening between them, then pull up a loop of extra string through his two fingers. Have him hold this loop wth one hand and the end of the string with his other hand, then pull them until he has a loop attached to the knot.

    • 4

Show the child how to place the crochet hook through the loop by pulling the end of the string until the loop is tight around the hook. He should be holding the yarn in place, with the knot directly below the hook.

    • 5

Demonstrate to the child how to wrap a piece of yarn over the crochet hook to create a second loop above the slip knot, then show him how to hold onto the piece of yarn with your other hand. Ask him to follow your instructions and repeat what you did.

    • 6

Show the child how to do the chain stitch. Demonstrate by bringing the hook over this piece of yarn, closest to the hook.

    • 7

Show the child how to pull the hook through the loop farthest from the crochet hook. Repeat steps 5 to 6 with the child to create a chain of yarn.
