Make pompoms with basic craft supplies.

When you use a lot of pompoms in your craft projects, you may feel frustrated by how plain and uninteresting the pompoms are when purchased from an art store. Instead of buying pompoms, make them yourself using basic craft supplies, such as multi-colored yarn. Making your own pompoms allows you to control how large or small they are and what type of yarn they are made from.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out two circles from cardboard measuring 4 inches in diameter with scissors.

    • 2

Cut out a circle from the middle of each cardboard circle that measures 2 inches in diameter.

    • 3

Select four different colors of yarn, 10 grams each, and roll each color of yarn into individual 2-inch-wide balls.

    • 4

Place the two cardboard donuts together, lining up the holes.

    • 5

Wrap one of the yarn balls over the top of the doubled donuts and through the holes, wrapping the yarn in this manner around the entire perimeter of the doubled cardboard form. Continue to wrap until you have wrapped the entire ball of yarn.

    • 6

Repeat this process to wrap all four balls of yarn.

    • 7

Hold the wrapped form vertically in your hand and cut around the circumference of the doubled cardboard to cut in between the donuts.

    • 8

Cut a separate piece of yarn using scissors to measure 6 inches long, and wrap it around the cut circumference of the form. Tie the yarn into a tight knot.

    • 9

Remove the cardboard donuts to leave behind a fluffy, multicolored pompom.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use up to seven different colors of yarn as you prefer to create a spectacular, rainbow-colored pompom.
