Your sink is one of the many options available for dyeing clothing at home, but often leaves a faint tint of color after draining the Rit dye from your sink. Thankfully, the residue is removable if you thoroughly wash the sink immediately after exposing it to the dye. A powerful scrubbing cleaner is required to break up the dye stains in the sink while preserving the sink's finish. Once cleaned, the sink should appear spotless and retain its smooth, shiny surface. Things You'll Need

  • Sink stopper
  • Rubber gloves
  • Chlorine bleach
  • Nonabrasive sponge
  • Cleaning cloth

Instructions

    • 1

      Insert the sink stopper into the sink's drain opening and put on rubber gloves to protect your hands from exposure to the bleach.

      Wet a sponge with hot water and turn on the sink's hot water to a low faucet setting to slowly fill the sink.

      Pour 1/2 cup of bleach in the sink and dip the sponge in the sink. Rub the sides and bottom of the sink with the bleach-dampened sponge to scrub off dye.

      Turn off the hot water once the water level fills near the top of the sink. Leave the hot water and bleach in the sink for 10 minutes to remove remaining stains.

      Pull the sink stopper out of the drain opening and rinse the sink with hot water and a clean cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use Rit dye in a fiberglass sink because it will leave a permanent stain.
