How to French Knit Using a Spool
A French knitting spool, also called a Knitting Nancy, knitting mushroom or knitting spool, is a type of very small knitting loom used to make long strands of knitted tubes. These tubes can be used as decorative trim, sewn together to make spiral-shaped craft items such as pot holders or doilies or -- if you use a small spool and fine thread -- even shoelaces. Knitting with a French spool can be done by anyone, even children, and can provide hours of creative crafting.

1
Drop the tail of your yarn through the center of your French knitting spool so that the working yarn -- the yarn connected to the skein -- is draped over the edge with the pins and the cut end is hanging out the bottom.
-
2
Wrap your working yarn around one of your pins from left to right. Pull the yarn around the front of the pin and wrap it left to right around the peg immediately to the left of the first. Continue around until you have wrapped all your pegs then carry the yarn to the outside of the spool between the fourth and first pegs.

-
3
Wrap the yarn around the outside of the spool in a counterclockwise direction, lying it above the loops already on the pins.
-
4
Pull the bottom loops up and over the top of the pegs, dropping them to the inside of the spool. Continue wrapping the yarn around the loom, one wrap at a time, and passing the bottom loops over the pegs until the knitted cord is the length you wish. Pull on the yarn tail that extends from the bottom of the spool periodically through the process to tighten your knitting.
-
5
Cut the yarn to leave a tail about 4 inches long. Thread the tail on a yarn needle and pass it through each of the loops left on your pegs. Pull the loops off the pegs and pull on the yarn to secure the knitting.
