1
Put on a pair of cleaning gloves and a respirator mask before cleaning out mold or mildew from your Kenmore Elite washer. Even if you can’t see mold, the spores may irritate your skin or lungs, so it’s better to take precautions before cleaning.
-
2
Open the door of the washing machine and locate the gray seal that fits between the door opening and the washing basket.
-
-
3
Remove any debris from the seal and throw away in a trash bag that you can immediately discard in an outdoor bin after you finish cleaning.
-
4
Mix a solution of 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach and 1 gallon of tap water.
-
5
Wet a cloth with the solution and wipe the entire seal gasket.
-
6
Wait five minutes to allow the cleaning solution to set, then wipe it away with a clean cloth.
-
7
Dry the seal and leave the machine’s door open to continue to dry.
-

Check the washer again the following day. If you still smell mold, clean the seal again, but this time with a scrub brush and a borate-based detergent, which you can find at most home goods stores.

Tips & Warnings
To prevent mold from growing in the washer, always leave the door wide open after your cycle is complete. This will allow the wet areas to dry out between washing. Without moist conditions, mold will likely not grow.
