How to Edit Clips in Premiere Elements

One of the most basic functions of the Adobe Premiere Elements video editing program is the ability to edit or "trim" the pieces of video that you've imported from a video camera, Web cam or other source. "Trimming" is also known simply as "editing," meaning taking parts of the clip out to make the video presentation flow better. After you have imported your clips, you'll learn quickly how to edit them in a couple different ways. One way is to edit them from the Preview Window, where you can view your clips before you drag them to the Timeline. Another option is to edit your clips right from the Timeline.

Instructions

  1. From the Preview Window

    • 1

Select "Project" from the Tasks pane and then click "Media."

    • 2

Double-click the clip you want to edit.

    • 3

Pull the "In Point" handle on the left-hand side of the clip (which looks like the left-hand side of a house) to the right to trim out some of the beginning of the clip. Click the "Set In" button.

    • 4

Pull the "Out Point" handle on the right-hand side of the clip (which looks like the right-hand side of a house) to the left to trim out some of the end of the clip. Click the "Set Out" button.

    • 5

Click the "X" to close the preview window.

    In the Timeline

    • 6

Select the "Selection" tool, which looks is a pointer icon, from the Timeline.

    • 7

Hover the Selection tool over the clip you want to edit. You should see a double arrow with a red, "zig zaggy" line appear.

    • 8

Pull the end of the clip to the left or right to remove portions of the clip. If you're at the beginning of the clip, drag the end toward the right to remove part of the beginning; if you're at the end of the clip, drag the end toward the left to remove part of the end.
