How to Crochet a Flag Purse

How to Crochet a Flag Purse thumbnail
You can crochet a flag purse with red, white and blue yarn.

Self-striping yarn will help you crochet a purse that resembles an American flag, if you know the basics of how to crochet. Use red and white self-striping yarn, available at knitting supply stores, to form the body of the purse, and use a simple embroidery technique to make white stars on the blue background of the purse flap. This patriotic purse will be a hit at the next Fourth of July party and would be a thoughtful handmade gift to someone with a July birthday.

  • 1 skein dark blue worsted weight yarn
  • Crochet hook size J

Instructions

    • 1

Loop the end of the self-striping yarn and pull the yarn strand through the loop with the crochet hook to make a chain stitch. Repeat, making a series of chain stitches that measures 8 inches long.

    • 2

Insert the hook in the third chain from the hook. Pull the yarn strand through the loop, then wrap the yarn over the hook and pull it through the two loops on the hook to make a single crochet stitch. Repeat, making a single crochet stitch in each chain stitch.

    • 3

Chain three, turn the piece of work, and single crochet in the top loop of each stitch of the previous row. Repeat this row until the piece of work is 16 inches long.

    • 4

Switch to the dark blue yarn by grabbing the blue strand with the hook before starting the next row. Make rows of single crochet, as done in the previous step, for another 4 inches of work. Knot and cut the yarn.

    • 5

Fold the red and white striped portion of work in half lengthwise. Thread the tapestry needle with the yarn and sew up the sides of the purse.

    • 6

Thread the tapestry needle with a 12-inch section of white yarn. Sew five rows of five “X” shapes over the blue yarn to represent stars, staggering the rows. Stick on hook-and-loop dots under the blue purse overlap and on the body of the purse for the purse closure.

    • 7

Insert the crochet hook in the top corner edge of the purse and make a series of chain stitches that is 24 inches long for the purse strap. Attach the end of the strap to the opposite top corner edge of the purse with the hook. Knot and cut the yarn.
