How to Make a Felt Button Book for Kids

Felt combines with buttons in an educational children's book.

Sturdy wool felt, sold by the yard at fabric stores, is the perfect material for a hand sewn button book that will fascinate young children. The book’s pages and the large numbers that are buttoned in place by young hands are both made from the felt, which will not unravel and needs no edge finishing. This soft book will teach toddlers over the age of 2 the mechanics of buttoning and the numbers 1 through 5.

Things You'll Need

• 1-yard wool felt
• Ruler
• Scissors
• Needle and thread
• Craft paper
• Straight pins
• Fabric pencil
• 10 large buttons

Instructions

1. Cut the wool felt into three rectangles of fabric that measure 8-by-16 inches each using the scissors.

2. Stack the rectangles on top of each other and fold the stack in half lengthwise. Sew a straight seam with the needle and thread 1/2-inch from the fold, through all the layers of felt to bind the book.

3. Cut out an 8-inch square of craft paper with the scissors. Draw freehand a large number 1 on the paper, taking up as much of the square as possible. Cut out the number 1 and pin it to a piece of felt. Cut out the felt number with the scissors.

4. Cut two lengthwise slits big enough for the buttons to go through in the number 1 with the scissors. Place the number 1 on the first page of the book and insert the fabric pencil through the slits, marking the sewing spots for two buttons. Sew the buttons on the page with the needle and thread. Button the number 1 in place.

5. Create the numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5 by the same method and sew buttons to the pages of the book to attach the numbers. Button the numbers to the pages.
