How to Make a Bone Fish Hook

Ancient man used a variety of fishing methods to catch his dinner, including one very similar to modern angling: A line fixed to some type of stick or branch with a sharp hook on the end, which ensnared any fish that bit it. Unlike modern hooks, these primitive fishing hooks were carved from natural materials, such as bone. You can carve your own fishing hook from bone to get in touch with your primitive instincts, reduce the number of metal hooks at the bottom of lakes or simply learn a new skill.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a piece of bone that is already roughly in the shape of a hook, if possible. Nasal or toe bones from small animals work best, although any bone will work. You can save the bone from your next steak or chicken dinner, for example, or purchase a cleaned bone intended for use as a dog toy from a pet store.

Cut the bone into the shape of a "J" using a sharp knife or straight razor. Make the shape larger than you want the final hook to be; the finished hook will be smaller after you smooth it down with a file. Consider cutting the top-most portion of the "J" larger than the rest to provide more support for attaching the fishing line.

Round the bone's edges using a nail file, working your way around the entire circumference with smooth, even motions. File the tip into a sharp point, but don't make it so thin that the bone will snap easily under the force of a struggling fish. Bore a hole through the top portion of the hook using the nail file. Make the hole just large enough for your line to fit through, otherwise it may break when tugged on.
