How to Crochet a Flat in the Round
Increasing, in crochet, refers to adding a stitch to a row or round. Without increasing, a crocheted round will grow sides and become a cylinder. If you increase too much, the edges will ruffle. Just the right amount of increase keeps the round flat. Double crochet is the only skill required to make a flat crocheted round.

1
Chain three. Single crochet six times in the first chain stitch, making a small, flat circle for the first round.
-
2
Double crochet twice in each stitch around, making the second round. This increases the size of the circle, which remains flat. Double crocheting twice in one stitch is an increase.

3
Double crochet in the next stitch, then double crochet twice in the next. Repeat this pattern around the circle for the third round. Again, this keeps the circle flat.

4
Double crochet once in each of the next two stitches, then double crochet twice in the third. Repeat this pattern around for the fourth round. Continue in this manner, adding one single double crochet between the increases. The fifth round will have three single double crochet stitches between each increase, for instance. Continue until the round is as large in diameter as desired.
