How to Clean Lenses on Hitachi Rear-projection TV

If you’ve noticed the picture on your Hitachi rear-projection TV getting dark or fuzzy, it may be time to clean the projection lenses. Over time, dust and dirt can build up inside the TV cabinet and collect on the lenses. Cleaning the lenses is not difficult, but it does require removing the back of the TV cabinet. Once inside the TV, you can clean the lenses on a Hitachi rear-projection TV in just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Hitachi rear-projection TV, unplug the power cable and allow the TV to cool for an hour.

    • 2

Remove the Phillips screws holding the lower-rear panel on the TV. Pull the panel off the TV and set it aside.

    • 3

Remove the Phillips screws around the perimeter of the rear shell of the TV. Slide the rear shell off the TV chassis and set it aside.

    • 4

Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe each projector lens. Wipe in a circular motion, starting at the center of the lens, working your way to the edge. Do not use solvents or cleaners on the lenses; use only a dry, soft cloth.

    • 5

Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any piles of dust that you pushed off the lenses onto the lens frame.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a vacuum with an electronics-brush attachment, you can use that in place of a cloth.

  • On some Hitachi models, it’s not necessary to remove the rear shell to access the lenses. Consult the documentation for your model to determine if you must remove the rear shell.

  • Solvents and cleaners can damage the lenses or leave residue behind.

  • Be careful not to come into contact with any of the electronic components in the lower half of the TV chassis.

  • Use light pressure when cleaning the lenses; too much pressure can cause misalignment or damage.
