How to Troubleshoot a PCG-FXA53

Computer problems can often be resolved after performing basic troubleshooting. Often, what appear to be a serious problem -- such as the computer failing to boot or hardware failing to respond -- can sometimes have a simple solution. If the Sony VAIO PCG-FXA53 is experiencing power or hardware problems, troubleshoot the power sources connected to the notebook, reset user hardware preferences and use the tools available in Windows to check for device conflicts.

Instructions

  1. Power or Boot Problems

    • 1

Close the LCD screen and turn over the notebook. Confirm that the battery is installed. Return the notebook to upright position.

    • 2

Check the floppy disk drive and optical disc drive for removable media. Remove any floppy disks, CDs or DVDs from the computer. Disconnect the external monitor, if applicable.

    • 3

Connect the AC adapter to the DC-in jack on the PCG-FXA53. Plug the adapter into a power outlet. If the AC adapter is connected to a power strip or surge protector, make sure that the power strip or surge protector is plugged in and turned on.

    • 4

Open the lid and press the power button. Check the indicator lights at the front of the computer. The power light and battery light should be solid green. If the battery light doesn't come on, the battery, AC adapter or DC-in jack may be broken.

    • 5

Disconnect the power adapter from the computer if the power indicator light is off. Turn over the computer, then remove the battery from the PC. Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the PC.

    • 6

Try another AC adapter, of an identical model, if the computer still fails to turn on. If the replacement adapter doesn't resolve the problem, the DC-in could be stripped, the power button could be broken or the motherboard could be defective.

Press "F10" to save and exit. Select "Yes" when prompted, then press "Enter." Boot in to Windows. Click "Start." Select "Run." Enter "devmgmt.msc" into the dialog box. Click "OK."

    • 10

Click the "+" next to each category. If an icon with an "!" or "X" appears to the left a device, double-click the device, then check the "Device Status" field to read about the error. Look up the error code in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase, found on Microsoft Support.

    • 11
