How to Jailbreak the iPod Touch Without Losing Music

Jailbreaking your iPod touch is entirely legal, but voids the device's warranty with Apple.

Jailbreaking an iPod touch unlocks the device from iTunes and allows you to install software from the independent Cydia application store. Some methods of jailbreaking reset your iPhone during the process, potentially losing any music or multimedia content that hasn't been synchronized with your computer. Using the JailbreakMe website to safely and securely jailbreak your iPod touch, you avoid resetting the device and losing any content.

Instructions

1. Launch the Safari Web browser on your iPod touch by tapping its icon on the home screen.

2. Navigate to the JailbreakMe website by typing "http://www.jailbreakme.com" into the address bar and tapping the "Go" button on the on-screen keyboard.

3. Tap the green "Free" button in the upper right corner to begin downloading the Cydia app store application and initiate the jailbreaking process.

4. Launch Cydia when the download has completed.

5. Tap the "Complete Upgrade" button in the pop-up dialog box. The latest version of Cydia is downloaded, and the iPod touch restarts to complete the jailbreak process. Once the device has restarted, it's fully jailbroken without losing any music or content.

Tips & Warnings

• You can continue to sync with iTunes as normal once the iPod touch has been jailbroken. Doing so will create a backup of your device's music content, should you ever need to reset it.

• If you restore or update the iPod touch through iTunes on your computer, its jailbroken status will be lost.
