How to Make a Pedestal Stand for a Washing Machine & Dryer

Making a pedestal stand for your washer and dryer can keep them up off the floor. This is beneficial if your house happens to be one where the basement gets flooded. The pedestals are not just for that purpose, however. By raising them off the floor, you can add some additional storage space where it may otherwise be limited. An average person with some basic skills using woodworking tools can build the pedestals in about an hour. You will want to make sure that you have a helper when the stands are complete to help you lift the machines into place on them. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place two 2-by-6 boards on the sawhorses. Measure the boards using a tape measure and mark the measurements with a pencil. You will need 12 boards 17 1/4 inches long and six 26 1/2 inches long to make the supports. Cut out the pieces using a circular saw and set them aside.

    • 2

Place three-quarter-inch plywood on the sawhorses. Measure two back pieces using the tape measure and mark them with the pencil. The pieces need to be 18 3/4 inches high by 26 1/2 inches long. Measure four sides out of the plywood using the tape measure and mark them at 18 3/4 inches high and 28 inches long using the pencil.

    • 3

Cut the sides out of the plywood using the circular saw and set them aside. Measure two pieces of plywood 28 inches square using the tape measure and mark them with the pencil. Cut the pieces out using the circular saw. Assemble the pedestal supports by nailing two 26 1/2-inch-long 2-by-6 boards into the ends of a 17 1/4-inch 2-by-6 board. Continue this process until you have six supports together.

    • 4

Stand two of the supports on the floor with the open ends on the floor. Place the third support on top of the first two and install the back piece of plywood first. Lay the plywood on the support and secure the back to the support using a drill, screwdriver bits and 2-inch wood screws. Set the support on the floor with the others.

    • 5

Install the sides on the supports using the drill, screwdriver bits and 2-inch wood screws. Place the top piece on the pedestal and secure it using the drill, screwdriver bits and 2-inch wood screws. Repeat the procedure to assemble the remaining pedestal.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use nails to attach the plywood to the supports, but it will be stronger if you use wood screws.
