How to Crochet a Single Stitch Medium Purse
Crocheting your own accessories is a creative way to demonstrate your fashion sense. A handmade medium-sized purse is perfect for carrying your phone, money, keys and other essentials while leaving extra room for other small items. The single-crochet stitch is one of the most basic stitches used in the crocheting craft. Therefore, a purse made with this stitch is a good choice for beginners. Also, the stitch is tight enough that the finished purse will not have gaps in the fabric, eliminating the need for a lining.

1
Create a slipknot in the yarn and place the knot's loop on the crochet hook. Grab the yarn with the hook tip and draw it through the loop to make the first chain stitch. Continue pulling yarn through the loop left on the hook from the previous stitch until you have a 20-inch length of chain stitches, measured with a ruler.
-
2
Insert the hook tip into the first chain stitch, catch the yarn and pull it through both the stitch and the loop on the hook. This creates a slipstitch that joins the chain stitches into a circle, which is called a "round" in crocheting.

3
Place the stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round. Insert the hook into the next chain stitch, catch the yarn and draw a second loop up beside the first loop on the hook. Catch the yarn again and draw it through both loops. One new loop should remain. This creates the purse's first single-crochet stitch.
-
4
Crochet one single-crochet stitch into each chain stitch of the round. Continue working one single-crochet stitch into each stitch from the previous round until the body of the purse measures 8 inches.
-
5
Cut the yarn with scissors, leaving a 25-inch tail. Draw the yarn through the final remaining loop, then thread the tail through the tapestry needle. Sew the bottom of the purse closed by holding the purse body flat and sewing in and out of the final round of stitches on either side of the opening.
-
6
Crochet eight chain stitches to begin the first strap. Crochet one single-crochet stitch into the second chain stitch from the hook, then make one single-crochet stitch into every remaining chain stitch. When you reach the end of the row, make one chain stitch and turn the work around. Single-crochet into every stitch of the next row, chain one stitch and turn the work around. Continue doing this until the strap measures 1 1/2 feet. Cut the yarn and draw it through the remaining loop.
-
7
Crochet a second purse strap identical to the first.
-
8
Sew the first strap onto the outside of the front of the purse body with the yarn and tapestry needle. Each strap end should be positioned 1 inch in from the side and 1 inch from the top. Sew the second strap in place on the outside of the back of the purse body, 1 inch inward from the side and top edges.

9
Weave in the loose ends.
