Use pictures of traditional Native American attire as a guide to create costumes for children.

For Halloween and Thanksgiving, preschoolers enjoy dressing up as Native Americans. Authentic Native American attire from the beginning of American settlement can be very difficult to reproduce. Instead, use crafty materials to make a fun and simple costume for your child to wear to school on these special occasions. Incorporate your artistic skills into this activity, and you can turn a brown paper bag into the body of the costume with little effort.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 large paper bag
  • Scissors
  • 10 long feathers
  • Hot glue

Instructions

    • 1

Place a paper bag flat on a table.

    • 2

Mark one inch starting from the top of the paper bag. Follow the mark and draw a straight line across the width of the bag.

    • 3

Cut horizontally across the marked line. You should now have two separate pieces: the paper bag and the cut-out strip. Pull the cut-out strip open so it looks like a large headband.

    • 4

Place the strip on the child's head to see where to cut. Use tape to adjust the size of the headband.

    • 5

Put the headband on the table and glue feathers all around onto the inside to create a headdress. Leave to dry.

    • 6

Let your child color or finger paint designs onto the front of the brown paper bag, which will be the front of the costume. Place by a window and let the paint dry.

    • 7

Open up the paper bag after it has dried. The opened part should be facing the ground.

    • 8

Cut up the middle of the front side. Continue to cut up the bag through the top and cut a hole to fit your child's head.

    • 9

Cut small arm holes on both sides of the paper bag by punching scissors through the paper and cutting a circle.

    • 10

Place the headdress on the child's head to complete the Native American costume.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a bedazzled headdress, add gems onto the paper bag headband.
