How to Make a Scarf Without Sewing

Scarves are a very simple and stylish way to remain warm during the coldest months. The most basic scarves are a length of cloth, cut to various lengths and widths with a fringe or knots at the end. Make scarves from materials such as yarn, jersey and old clothes, but polar fleece in particular makes for an exceptionally warm and durable scarf with no sewing and no need to wash before cutting or wearing. Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a piece of fleece cloth from a local hobby or department store. Pick any style you or the wearer may want; women typically want more feminine colors or prints, while men generally prefer solid colors or simple patterns. The length should be about 1 3/4 yards, which is about 5 feet.

    • 2

Lay out the material evenly on a table. Measure a section of the cloth about 12 inches wide and 60 to 72 inches long. These measurements can easily be adjusted for people who like longer or thinner scarves. For children, use a section of cloth about 6 inches wide and 30 to 36 inches long.

    • 3

Fold the fabric in half so the bottom edges are even with each other. Measure out the desired width, and make a cut with the scissors down the length of the fleece. You can use a fabric pen or the ruler to create a straight edge, but you can fix any variations in length later. Remove any rough or frayed sections at the ends of the fabric.

Cut a fringe into both ends of the scarf. Keep the material folded with the ends even, and place a cut about every 1/2 to 1/4 inch in the material. The length of fringe varies but is generally between 1 1/2 to 2 inches or slightly longer for scarves with a knotted fringe. Once again, use a ruler or pen to mark the fringe, or eyeball it for a more homemade look.

    • 5

Tie knots into the fringe. Another option for scarves is to tie knots at the tops of each strand in the fringe. The fringe should be cut longer, between 2 and 3 inches, in scarves that are going to be knotted.
