With an uncomplicated technique, you can add a knit border to any blanket, if you know the basics of how to knit. The border is knit one side at a time and can be used to enhance a flannel baby receiving blanket or a plain fleece blanket. The border can be used to add a personalized touch to any purchased blanket of any size and is the decorative knit border is great for afghan-type throws.

Things You'll Need

  • Carpet thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Two knitting needles, size 8

Instructions

      Sew a series of hand sewn whip stitches over one side edge of the blanket every 1/2-inch, using the sewing needle and carpet thread.

      Insert one knitting needle in the first whip stitch in the edging. Wrap the yarn around the stitch and pull it through the whip stitch. Repeat with each whip stitch, creating a row of cast on knitting stitches on the knitting needle

      Knit each row for 10 rows.

      Repeat the last three steps on the opposite edge of the blanket.

      Whip stitch along one remaining blanket edge, from the end of the knitted border to the other end of the knitted border. Insert the needle to cast on stitches and knit every row for 20 rows.

      Repeat the last step on the remaining blanket edge.
