How to Make a Crochet Reef Knot

How to Make a Crochet Reef Knot thumbnail
Joining yarn ends may be necessary to change colors in a pattern or to add more yarn length.

Reef knots are used to join two lengths of yarn together in the middle of the crocheting process. The reef knot can be used when running out of yarn or simply to change up the color in a crocheting pattern. The knot is similar to knots used for tying shoes, and is a stronger joining style than methods that draw new thread through incomplete stitches. The reef knot can later be anchored on the backside of the crochet work, with the help of a crochet needle.

Instructions

    • 1

Cross yarn ends, right over left. The right end should be the original yarn you were working with, left being the new yarn end you'd like to join.

    • 2

Wrap the old end underneath the new end, pulling the old end back up to create a twist.

    • 3

Cross the left end over the right end, pushing the left end through the loop created in between the two twists. Pull the yarn ends taut.

    • 4

Continue crocheting, keeping the tails of the yarn ends to the back of the work.

    • 5

Thread one tail end through a crochet needle and push the needle through a few stitches on the backside of the work to anchor the tail. Trim excess with scissors and repeat for second tail end.
