How to Graph a Crochet Name for an Afghan
A personalized afghan is a treasured keepsake for its owner. A crocheted afghan can be designed with the name of the person that it is being custom-made for. Use a graph to make a crochet pattern and guideline for the name to be worked into the blanket. Colored pencils will separate the stitches on the squares of graph paper allowing you to see each stitch needed to comprise each letter in script or print. The graphed name is crocheted using a single or double crochet stitch on the afghan.

1
Place a piece of graph paper onto your work surface. Print the name out on a separate piece of paper to be sure that you have spelled it correctly.
-
2
Choose the type of alphabet font that you want to use for the name. A block print is a good font to choose for a beginner project. Use a copy of the alphabet font as a guideline when graphing the name.

3
Count each square on the graph paper as a crochet stitch. Mark the top two rows on the paper with the same number of stitches that the afghan has in the two rows before the name will be crocheted into the blanket. For example if the afghan has 126 stitches across it, count 126 squares on the graph.
-
4
Pencil in the name on the graph sheet. Make sure to count an equal number of spaces between the letters. Erase any mistakes with an art eraser and continue until all of the letters are evenly spaced.
-
5
Check each letter to be sure it is the same height and width as the others in the name for a uniform look. Once you are sure that the letters are finished, go over each square with a colored pencil to depict the color you intend to use for the afghan project.
