1
Select a festive Christmas tablecloth and spread it on the table. If you don't have a Christmas themed tablecloth, a lace tablecloth with or without a red or green cloth underneath gives the table simple elegance. If desired, place a complementary placemat at each place at the table.

2
Place a charger plate, intended only to protect the table linens, at each place if you want to use underplates for extra elegance. Select red, green, gold or silver chargers as best complements your plate design. Set the dinner plates on top of the chargers and the soup bowl on top of the dinner plate.

3
Set the silverware an inch or two from the edge of the table. On the right hand side of the plate, place the dinner knife next to the plate, followed by the teaspoon, the soup spoon and the cocktail fork, in that order. On the left hand side of the plate, place the dessert fork next to the plate, then the dinner fork and the salad fork.

4
Place the salad plate or bread and butter plate just above the forks on the left with a butter knife, if needed. Set the coffee cup and saucer above the spoons on the right. Water glasses and wine goblets go to the left of the coffee cup.
-
5
Fold the napkin simply and place to the left of the salad fork or under the soup bowl. Alternatively, you may choose a decorative fold or napkin rings and arrange the napkin around the edge of the soup bowl on the plate.

6
Add candles in candle holders and a Christmas centerpiece such as a bouquet of evergreen and holly sprigs for the finishing touch. Keep the centerpiece and decorations low so your guests can see one another to converse during dinner. Aim for "less is more" in table decorations to leave room for the food platters and avoid distracting clutter.
