How to Groom a Shar-Pei for a Show
Shar-Pei dogs are a devoted and affectionate breed. They are loved for their strength, juxtaposed by a soft wrinkled face. If you brush your Shar-Pei regularly, you've already got a good start on getting him ready for a show. Shar-Peis do not require trimming or a high-maintenance grooming regime, so getting one ready for a show is a much different process than for most other dogs. Prepare for a show by learning how to properly groom your Shar-Pei to look his best.

1
Wipe the insides of the ears with a damp washcloth.
-
2
Use a bathtub or wash basin to bathe the Shar-Pei. Soak his entire body with lukewarm water.

3
Exfoliate shedding hair and dead skin by brushing the Shar-Pei with a rubber-bristle brush. Move the brush in circular motions from the dog's head toward his tail.
-
4
Use a no-tears puppy shampoo on the Shar-Pei's entire body, including his face. Rinse the shampoo completely from his body and pat him dry with a large towel.
-
5
Wipe buildup from around the eyes with a damp washcloth. Start with the washcloth in the inner corner of the eye and lightly brush buildup out and away from the eye.
-
6
Hold the creases along the Shar-Pei's body open with your hands and, with the hair dryer about 6 inches away from the skin, direct the airflow from the dryer into the folds and wrinkles until they are completely dry.

Spray a dog conditioner onto the coat of the Shar-Pei, but not into his face. Judges look for a healthy, natural coat, which for a Shar-Pei means straight and coarse. Do not use so much conditioning product that the coat looks shiny.

Tips & Warnings
Do not let water into a Shar-Pei's ears as it could trigger an infection. Use a damp cloth as specified in the grooming instructions.
Do not trim the hair of the Shar-Pei. Show judges look for a coat that is natural in length; dogs will be faulted if their hair is trimmed unnaturally.
