How to Make a Moon Lamp for an Aquarium

During the night in a fish's natural environment the moon provides a little glow beneath the water surface. Re-producing this low light in your aquarium can reduce stress on your fish. On top of that, the low glow illuminates the tank, allowing you to watch the fish at night. Many pet-supply stores sell these lights, but you can make one yourself out of inexpensive components.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of your tank if you don't already have that information. For a standard fish tank one 12-inch cold cathode light kit should suffice. However, if you have a tank that holds dozens or hundreds of gallons of water, you may need more.

    • 2

Spray paint the bulbs of the lights with blue spray paint and wait for the paint to thoroughly dry.

    • 3

Open the lid to the aquarium and run as many lights as need be along the inside lid.

    • 4

Secure the ends of the lights to the inside lid with duct tape.

    • 5

Run the power cord of the lights through the feeding hole or any other opening in the lid.

    • 6

Plug the lights into the nearest power source and turn on the lights at night.
