DIY: Table Tennis Net

DIY: Table Tennis Net thumbnail
Table tennis nets divide the table into halves that are 4 1/2 feet by 5 feet.

Craft your own net for hours of table tennis enjoyment. Traditional nets include a cross-pattern, mesh-like design with flexibility to slightly bend from the force of a striking ball. A net is necessary to distinguish your side of the table from the opponent's side. Purchasing a prefabricated version can run you upwards of $37 -- a costly expense. Making your own net can save you substantial money and be constructed with several household tools in no time at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the outline of a 6-inch-by-5-foot rectangle onto a piece of mesh fabric. Cut out the rectangle with a pair of fabric scissors. The rectangle acts as your net.

    • 2

Lay a 1-inch-by-5-foot elastic strip onto a work surface. Coat the strip with permanent epoxy. Overlap one of the long sides of the net onto the elastic by 1/2 inch. Fold the remaining 1/2 inch of elastic over the long edge of the net. Press the elastic fabric pieces together to secure the bond. The strip-covered edge represents the top of the net.

    • 3

Bond one 1/2-inch-by-6-inch shoebox cardboard strip to the right edge of the net. Bond a second 1/2-inch-by-6-inch shoebox cardboard strip to the left edge of the net. The cardboard strips help stabilize the net as it slides into the upright posts attached to the table.

    • 4

Bond a 1-inch-by-6-inch elastic strip to the right edge of the net in the same fashion as the top edge elastic strip. Bond a 1-inch-by-6-inch elastic strip to the left edge of the net in the same fashion as the top edge elastic strip.
