How to Make a Model Teepee for School thumbnail
Teepees are a fun and simple project for school children to make.

The teepees is iconic in Native American culture. Aside from their unique construction, they are a testament to the innovation and resourcefulness of the many tribes that still exist in North America today. Considering their importance, it is no surprise that children will eventually learn about these societies in school. With this in mind, children may be asked to create a model teepee of their own. With a little help, young students can create a model teepee they can proudly display.

  • 4 sticks, 1 foot long
  • White fabric

Instructions

    • 1

Use the yarn to lightly tie the sticks together near the top area of the teepee.

    • 2

Move the sticks outward to form a cone shape.

    • 3

Lay one side of the twig structure onto a piece of construction paper, and trace the outline with a pencil. Cut along the lines with scissors. This will create a triangular template for the rest of the craft.

    • 4

Lay the fabric down on the table and hold it in place with your hand. Put the triangular template on top, and lightly trace the triangle four times with your marker. Trace the triangles right next to each other so they are connected.

    • 5

Cut the connect triangles around the outside edges only. Do not cut them individually. This will create one large outer skin for the structure.

    • 6

Draw a small, round opening at the bottom of one of the triangles to create the teepee's entrance. Cut the shape out with scissors.

    • 7

Draw various designs on the fabric. Use markers to create Native American-themed images, or hide-like patterns on the fabric. Any colors will do.

    • 8

Fold the fabric along the triangles' lines to create small creases. Sew the two free edges with a needle and thread to complete the cone. Cut the top of the cone off so that the sticks can protrude from it.

    • 9

Stand the sticks up and slide the fabric on top. Use the glue gun to attach each stick to the bottom of the structure. The teepee is now complete.
