DIY Monster T-Shirt Applique

Although monster appliques can be purchased from various different craft stores, creating your own can be an excellent way to use old T-shirts or scraps of fabric. These monster appliques will work for adult and children’s T-shirts, or even onesies. When making your own monster applique you can use whatever colors, fabric and shapes you like. In addition, adding a monster applique to a plain base T-shirt can be a great way to revamp an old T-shirt.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan out how you would like the monster applique to look on the T-shirt.

    • 2

Use various different fabrics to cut out pieces to make the monster’s face. This will vary by the size of the T-shirt and your personal preferences. For example, cut out the monster’s face in a bright-colored fabric and the mouth, eyes, ears and nose in different patterned fabrics.

    • 3

Use the piece of fabric for the monster’s face to trace onto a piece of interfacing. Cut out the interfacing.

    • 4

Place the piece of fabric for the monster’s face face down, and line up the interfacing on top of the fabric. Make sure the smooth side of the interfacing is facing up.

    • 5

Iron the fabric and interfacing together by setting the iron to the appropriate setting for the fabric with the steam on. Hold the iron in place on the fabric for 10 seconds. Do not slide around the iron, and keep holding it on for 10 second intervals until the fabric is fused with the interfacing.

    • 6

Pin the different parts of the monster’s face in place. Sew them onto the fabric and interfacing using a sewing machine and a simple stitch.

    • 7

Iron the T-shirt flat, and pin the completed face onto the T-shirt where you would like it to be sewn.

    • 8

Sew the face onto the T-shirt with the sewing machine and remove the pins.
