How to Make Curtains for a Dorm Room

How to Make Curtains for a Dorm Room thumbnail
Whatever fabric you use, dorm curtains are a quick decor fix.

Dorm decor is simple, functional and inexpensive. None of the items in the room are expected to last much longer than two semesters, so they're rarely made of high-quality materials. This doesn't mean that you can't have attractive items in your dorm. Cover your windows without needing to use a sewing machine, and make your room look good while doing it. Take advantage of the ready-made sealed edging on fabric bolts to avoid half the seams most curtains would need.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your window from the top of the window opening to below the windowsill, wherever you would like the bottom of the curtain to touch. Add 6 inches to this length. Cut two pieces of cotton fabric this length, keeping the entire width of the fabric intact.

    • 2

Lay one fabric piece on your work table with one raw edge in front of you and the right side of the fabric face down. Fold up the raw edge one-half inch. Make a crease in the fabric along the fold by running your thumbnail on top of the folded fabric.

    • 3

Fold up this same edge another half-inch. Pin this fold in place with straight pins. Sew this seam, stitching right along the creased edge. This creates the bottom hem in your curtain.

    • 4

Turn the fabric around so the other raw edge is in front of you. Turn up a half-inch fold and crease it, as before. Fold this edge up 2 inches and pin it in place. Sew this edge down, stitching right along the creased edge. This creates the pocket where the curtain rod will slip through at the top of the curtain.

    • 5

Make another curtain with the second piece of cut fabric in the same manner as the first. Hang up your curtains by slipping a curtain rod through the tunnel at the top and hanging the rod on the hardware supplied on the wall. Hang the curtains with the right side facing inside the room.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make only one curtain if you have a narrow window that you simply want to cover completely.
