How to Lubricate an Emperor Grandfather Clock

Emperor clocks are manufactured by a company of the same name located in Amherst, Va., in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Among the many clocks Emperor fabricates are grandfather clocks. Like any other clock or watch, routine maintenance is necessary to keep the movements working properly. This includes regular winding as well as lubrication. After you have removed the movement from your Emperor grandfather clock, you can oil it yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the Emperor grandfather clock movement upside down, with the back side exposed.

    • 2

Locate the oil sinks on the back plate of the Emperor grandfather clock movement. These are small holes in the back plate that vary in number, but there should be about 11 or 12.

    • 3

Squeeze one drop of clock oil out of a tube into each oil sink. Do not lubricate the movement too much or the oil will overrun, dripping from the movement into the clock.

    • 4

Flip the Emperor grandfather clock movement over, allowing the front to face up.

    • 5

Oil each oil sink on the front plate with one drop of oil in each.

    • 6

Set the movement upright on a table and turn it sideways to expose the wheels. Oil the ends of the center wheel with one drop of oil on each end.

    • 7

Turn the movement back over, exposing the front and place one drop of oil on each post, then lightly lubricate the pulleys to finish.
