Participate in cheerleading in high school and college.

Cheerleading is a physically and mentally demanding sport. To be a professional cheerleader, you must have skills in performance, acrobatics and dance. To hone these skills, a prospective cheerleader receives as much training as possible from a young age and continues to challenge herself as she advances. With enough practice and determination, you can show up to professional cheerleading auditions with confidence.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your body healthy. Eat a well-rounded diet and workout regularly. Run, lift weights, take workout classes at a local gym, do yoga or engage in any other physical activity you enjoy. Professional cheerleaders are required to be physically fit for performance and appearance reasons.

    • 2

Join a cheerleading squad as soon as possible. If you're in middle school or high school, join your school team. The quickest way to advance in any sport is to practice with a team. Being on a cheerleading squad gives you the practical and social experience needed to be a professional.

    • 3

Take dance classes as often as possible. Take a multitude of styles, including jazz, hip hop and modern. Professional cheerleaders need technique, style and rhythm. Professional cheerleading routines utilize multiple styles of dance.

    • 4

Take acrobatics classes. Cheerleaders with tumbling skills are more competitive in professional tryouts. While not all cheerleaders tumble, being able to do so will increase your chances of being hired as a professional.

    • 5

Research the professional cheerleading team you wish to join. Contact the team coach to ask about tryout dates and requirements. Ask for the contact information of a current team member and ask her for hints and tips. Doing your research may help you stand out from the crowd.

    • 6

Prepare your look for the tryout. A professional cheerleader is required to be well-dressed and have her hair and make-up done in a professional manner. Get your hair and makeup done at a salon before the tryout. Book your appointment in advance to avoid stress the day of the tryout.

    • 7

Show up to your tryout 30 minutes early to avoid stress and anxiety. Meet and greet the other girls, the current team members, the coach and the judges. A professional cheerleading coach wants to know that you are both physically and socially capable of being a professional cheerleader.

Tips & Warnings

  • Go to as many tryouts as possible at the earliest age you feel prepared. If you begin trying out when you're 18 years old, you can gather knowledge from each tryout experience and increase your chances of being hired.

  • Give your best performance at the tryout, but remember that failing to make the team this time does not end your career. Gather as much feedback as you can and prepare yourself for another audition if you don't make the team the first time.
