Add decorations like silk flowers once your wristband is complete.

String wristbands and bracelets are made by tying knots in different patterns. Some are intricate and painstaking, and others are quick and simple. Customize your own wristbands by experimenting with different types and colors of string. Embroidery floss makes a delicate and colorful bracelet, while twine makes a thicker, more rugged wristband.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four pieces of string three times the circumference of your wrist. Align all strings at one end and knot them together about an inch below the edge. Stick a safety pin through the knot and secure it to something that will withstand slight pressure. Clip it into a clipboard or pin it to your couch. Secure it somewhere you can sit and comfortably make the wristband.

    • 2

Separate the four strands into two groups of two strands. Place strands "1" and "2" toward the left side of the work surface, and place strands "3" and "4" in a straight line from the knot to you.

    • 3

Place the end of strands "1" and "2" over strands "3" and "4" to form an L shape.

    • 4

Tuck the end of strands "1" and "2" under strands "3" and "4" above the horizontal line of the L, coming up between the L shape and the vertical line strands "3" and "4" are holding. Firmly grasp the end that has just come up through this space in your right hand and hold the end of strands "3" and "4" in your left hand. Slowly pull to tighten, letting the newly-formed knot rest at the base of the large knot at the beginning of the bracelet.

    • 5

Repeat the L shape and knot in the same manner with strands "1" and "2" forming the L shape and strands "3" and "4" forming the vertical line.

    • 6

Place strands "3" and "4" on the left side of the work surface and place strands "1" and "2" in a straight line down from the knot that begins the wristband. Make two knots as before, but with this orientation of strands.

    • 7

Repeat knotting and switching positions of strands until the wristband is long enough to go around your wrist. Knot all four strands together once more and cut off excess string.
