Display your model airplane by hanging it from the ceiling.

Hobby airplane models look great hung from a ceiling on fishing wire because the wire is invisible from a distance, giving the impression that the airplane is flying on its own. After the time, effort and skill you've put into your airplane model, you want to display it in a way that will minimize the possibility of damage. Suspending a hobby airplane model from the ceiling using fishing wire is safe, and it is also the perfect way to show off your craftsmanship.

Instructions

    • 1

Consider where you want to hang the airplane model in your house, and how low or high you want it to hang. You want to hang the airplane in a place it can be easily admired, but out of the way to avoid damage.

    • 2

Light the candle. Hold the tip of the needle in the flame for a few seconds to heat it.

    • 3

Use the hot needle to poke a hole in the center of the fuselage of the airplane model. Make one hole in the tail of the airplane. Make one hole in the top center of each wing.

    • 4

Measure fishing wire that is double the length you need, plus 12 inches. For example, if you want to suspend your airplane 2 feet from the ceiling, cut 5 feet of fishing wire. Cut the fishing wire, then measure out an identical length and cut a second fishing wire. Now you should have two identical lengths of fishing wire.

    • 5

Insert one end of the fishing wire into the hole of the fuselage. Fasten it in place with a dab of superglue. Take the other end of the fishing wire and insert it into tail hole. Superglue it in place. This wire will determine the pitch of the airplane's nose.

    • 6

Pick up the second fishing wire and insert one end into the hole in one wing, and dab with superglue to secure it. Insert the other end of the same fishing wire into the hole in the other wing, and dab with superglue. This wire will determine the angle of the airplane's wings.

    • 7

Attach a small hook to your ceiling. You can buy these hooks at any hardware store.

    • 8

Hang the airplane by putting both fishing lines over the hook. Adjust the pitch of the airplane until you're satisfied by gently pulling the fishing wire up and down. Once the airplane has reached an ideal pitch, mark the fishing line where it touches the hook.

    • 9

Remove the airplane from the hook. Knot together the two fishing wires at the spot you marked. Hang the airplane and cut off any excess wire on the knot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on the size and weight of your hobby airplane, you might need a thicker fishing wire.

  • Do not hang your airplane model by a vent. The flow from the vent will cause the airplane to swing, and heat coming out of the vent may damage your plane.
