How to Iron on Applique Designs

How to Iron on Applique Designs thumbnail
Applique patterns of all shapes and sizes can be ironed on to clothing or other items.

Appliques are fun to make because you can be creative in your designs. No matter what size or shape you make your applique, the easiest way to place them on clothing and other items is to iron them on. Iron-on adhesive paper and an iron will do the job of keeping the appliques intact and adding pizazz to your clothes.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the iron-on adhesive paper to the shape of the applique design.

    • 2

Place the applique design face down on your work surface.

    • 3

Place the iron-on adhesive paper on the applique design, with the paper side facing up.

    • 4

Press and hold the iron on the adhesive paper for two seconds. The iron should be on a medium setting. Do not use steam. If using thick appliques, consult the instructions for the iron-on adhesive paper for the length of ironing time. You will probably need to iron longer if you are using thick appliques. Be sure to let the applique cool after ironing.

    • 5

Center the applique design on your clothing or material. Make sure the design is where you want it to be on your clothing or material. Peel off the backing on the adhesive paper and then place the applique, adhesive side down, on the clothing or material.

    • 6

Press and hold the iron on top of the applique so that it adheres to the clothing or material.

    • 7

Add decoration to the applique, if you'd like, by hand stitching or machine stitching details around the shape or using fabric paint to outline the applique's shape.
