How to Emboss With an Embossing Pen

Embossing is an effective way to dress up greeting cards and other paper projects. Embossing adds shine to the paper, as well as raises the texture so that you can feel the embossed images or words with your fingers. When you want to emboss words or other types of fine details on paper, it is best to use an embossing pen, which gives you control over what you emboss. The pen acts as a highlighter over predesigned words or images, and it contains the embossing ink so you don't need to purchase embossing ink pads.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the side of the embossing pen you wish to use. Embossing pens have two sides: one side has a thinner pen tip and the other has a thicker tip. This gives you options based on how thick or thin you want the embossed words and images to be. Remove the cap over the embossing pen tip you will be using.

    • 2

Place the tip of the pen over the words or images on the card stock to be embossed. Highlight the words or images with the embossing pen by tracing over it. The ink from the pen will come on faint and almost translucent. Some inks are completely clear, while others have sheer colors.

    • 3

Sprinkle the embossing powder onto the image or words you just outlined with the embossing pen. Apply a generous amount of the embossing powder. Allow the embossing powder to stay on the card stock for a few seconds. Tap off the powder onto the working surface. You will see a shimmer where the embossing will be.

    • 4

Turn on the heat tool. Hold the tool several inches away from where the embossing pen outlined and move the heat tool back and forth. If you leave the heat tool stationary, it could become too hot for the embossing ink and damage the card stock. When you see that the embossing powder is melted, you can move onto the next area that was embossed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not touch the embossed ink after using the heat tool over it. Wait a few minutes or the melted ink will burn your skin.
