DIY Foam Reptile Background

You can make a new background when you get bored with the one you have.

Reptiles aren’t your garden variety pet, like cats or dogs, but they require just as much care. Reptiles have sensitive eyes that can suffer damage after prolonged exposure to a simple white wall. A decorative, colorful background for your aquarium can make it look more attractive while protecting your reptile’s eyes. A simple piece of foam with a decorative painting is sufficient.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the back wall of your aquarium. Cut a piece of foam to that size using a craft knife.

    • 2

Draw a sketch on the side of your foam panel. Or, if you are especially artistically inclined, you don’t need to use any base design. You can skip this step and just paint freehand and see what you come up with.

    • 3

Paint the backdrop with your paint. Use the sketch to guide your painting.

    • 4

Allow the foam backboard to dry before you move it. Press it against the side of the aquarium. Tape it in place at each corner to hold it securely.

    • 5

Push the aquarium into position. The backboard creates a solid barrier between the wall and the habitat enclosure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase bold acrylic paint colors that are on the dark side. Bright colors will hurt your reptile’s eyes almost as much as a white wall.
