How to Make a Basket Weave Heart Out of Construction Paper

Weave pieces of paper like a basket for a stand-out aesthetic.

Basket weave patterns using construction paper are less about making actual baskets and more about mimicking the interlaced pattern of straw baskets using paper. Use two sheets of construction paper that have strikingly different colors so the basket weave pattern stands out. You can make a variety of shapes with basket weaved paper but hearts are ideal as tokens of affection and are ideal for a holiday craft.

Things You'll Need

• Printer
• Heart weave basket template
• Scissors
• 8.5-by-11 construction paper, two colors

Instructions

1. Print out the heart weave basket template and then cut out the two shapes with scissors. Each piece is a half of a heart.

2. Place one of the heart shapes on a piece of construction paper and hold it still with one hand. Cut around the shape to create a similar shape on the piece of construction paper. Next, cut along the black lines on the shape, also creating these cut lines on the construction paper.

3. Repeat Step 2 using a different color of construction paper, resulting in the two pieces of construction paper that you will use to weave a heart shape.

4. Arrange the two pieces of construction paper at right angles to each other. One piece of the paper's strips are arranged horizontally and the other vertically. Take the top most strip of the horizontal paper and slide it under the right most strip of the vertical paper.

5. Move the top most strip over the next strip on the vertical piece of paper. Bring the top most strip under the following strip on the vertical paper. Continue the over and under pattern until the horizontal strip reaches the end of the vertical piece of paper.

6. Slide the horizontal paper upward until the second strip makes contact with the vertical strips. Next, repeat steps 4 and 5 to weave this horizontal strip with the vertical strips. Continue this pattern until you have interlaced all strips.
