1
Complete a college diploma in music production, attend a trade school for learning how to become a DJ, or act as an apprentice to an already established disc jockey. Before you can attempt to make a living off being a DJ you must possess the right skills and know how to work all your equipment.
-
2
Practice every day to hone your mixing and blending techniques. The mark of a good DJ is to blend one song smoothly into the next so there is never a lull in the music. Being a DJ is a skill that changes constantly as new technology is introduced into the industry. You must keep on top of new technology and learn how to use it effectively.

Market yourself. Create a website, and join social networking groups. One of the best ways to become known as a DJ is to put yourself out there and advertise yourself. Having an online presence is one of the easiest, and cheapest, ways of letting people know that you exist.
-
4
Accept every opportunity that comes your way, even if it is not the “scene” you are looking to get into. A paying gig is a paying gig, and when you are first starting out, any opportunity to DJ is a valuable one. The more you DJ, the more people you will meet and the wider known you will become.
-
5
Create a DJ name and make yourself some official business cards. Once you have a DJ name, you will be able to use this as a way of marketing yourself. Hand out your business cards during your gigs. Business cards make you look like a serious disc jockey.
