Antiquing the Edges of Paper

Make new paper look old by antiquing the edges.

As paper ages it yellows, wrinkles, warps and otherwise changes in appearance. The edges of a piece of paper usually see the bulk of the changes, being more vulnerable than the center of the paper. Time isn't necessary to create the antique, time-worn edges possessed by old documents; you can hurry the process along. Antiqued paper can be used for scrapbooking, art, crafts and even creating treasure maps.

Things You'll Need

• Paper towel
• Butter knife
• Sink
• Candle

Instructions

1. Tear your paper instead of cutting it for a rough, uneven edge. If you are using precut paper, tear off a thin strip along each edge of the sheet of paper.

2. Wet about 1/2 inch of the edges of the paper using a damp paper towel. The paper should be slightly damp but not entirely soaked.

3. Use a butter knife to carefully scuff the damp edges of the paper. If the paper tears more than you intended, don't worry; uneven edges add character to your project.

4. Place a candle in an empty sink. Pillar candles are stable and not easily knocked over, making them great for this project. Light the candle and let it burn for a couple minutes, or until the length of the flame stabilizes.

5. Hold the piece of paper over the candle so that the edge of the paper is about 2 inches from the tip of the candle flame. Move the piece of paper so that the edge of the paper passes over the candle flame. Continue moving the paper over the flame until the edges darken. Put small flames out with the damp paper towel.

Tips & Warnings

• Antique the edges of your paper after all writing, drawing, printing, wrinkling and tinting have been completed.

• If the paper begins to flame dangerously, drop the paper in the sink and run water to put out the flame.
