DIY Boom Pole

A boom microphone is a piece of film equipment used to record the sound in the majority of scene settings. A microphone is attached to the end of a long pole, then the audio cables run down the pole to a sound mixer. The microphone can be held over the action in a scene for clean and crisp sound. Although all pieces of professional film equipment can be expensive, a boom pole can be made at home for considerably less.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray paint your broom handle, if desired, and allow to dry completely.

    • 2

Slip bicycle handlebar pads onto the broom handle -- the first about half way up the pole, and the second about 4 inches from the bottom of the pole.

    • 3

Attach the microphone to the microphone mount, then clip the entire piece to the top of the boom pole.

    • 4

Secure the mount with a screw and bolt, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have a microphone mount, you can secure the microphone to the boom pole with duct, gaffers or electrical tape, but the sound quality may suffer, as the microphone position will not be adjustable.
