DIY Foam Caulk

DIY Foam Caulk thumbnail
Caulk your windows to reduce drafts in the winter months.

Foam caulking is a type of sealant used by homeowners to seal around windows, doors and other areas where warm air can escape. Unlike silicone caulking, which comes in tubes and requires a caulking gun to install, most foam caulk comes in its own pressurized spray can. Foam caulk is made out of polyurethane foam—a breathable, lightweight foam that will not damage the stability of doors and windows when it dries. Use foam caulking to fill gaps, minimize energy costs and even to protect against fire, as many foam caulking products are fire-retardant. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area to be caulked with soap and water to thoroughly remove and dirt and debris. Dry the area.

    • 2

Hold the nozzle of the foam caulk can so it is sticking right inside the gap or crack you aim to fill.

    • 3

Press down on the button on top of the can to release the caulk. Press slowly at first so you can regulate the stream of caulking as it comes out.

    • 4

Press the button as you move the nozzle of the can along the path you wish to caulk.

    • 5

Leave the product to dry overnight. If you have gotten foam caulk in an unwanted area, wipe it up immediately with a damp cloth; otherwise it will harden.
