How to Give Notice at Work When You Are Relocating

Relocating is an important development in your life. You should notify important people about your plans -- including your employer. Your employer should be among the very first to know once your plans are certain. How you give notice at work when you are relocating could affect your professional image. Giving an employer the most notice possible often makes for a smooth exit and possibly an open invitation to return to your old job if things don’t work out or you simply want to come back.

Check your list of deadlines for projects and initiatives in your current job. Ideally, choose a date for leaving your company based on your relocation plans and work you should finish before leaving. Although a notice of two weeks is regarded by some as standard, you may need four weeks to finish a strategic plan or an annual budget. Offering to complete important duties before moving on with your relocation is a nice touch.

Read notes or correspondence related to your relocation. If you’re taking another job, the new employer may need you in three weeks. Balance personal and family relocation issues against issues remaining on your current job as you prepare to give your notice.

Meet with your boss. Get right to the point as you tell your boss that you are relocating to take another job, care for parents, return to school or something else. Thank your boss for the time you have spent with the company while making it clear that it’s time for you to relocate. Tell the boss that you have reviewed your project list and that you plan to leave the company after wrapping up the most pressing issues.
